(Story Courtesy of WBAP/KLIF News) – At least four people have died in Saturday’s severe weather in Van Zandt County. The mayor of Canton says 49 others were injured.
Governor Greg Abbott has sent search and rescue teams to the area, and fire departments from as far away as the Dallas-Fort Worth area have sent crews to help in the operation.
“They will be going from door to door, seeing if anyone is trapped, needs help or worse,” says Canton Mayor Lou Ann Everett.
Canton and Van Zandt County have cut off access to areas that were damaged. The National Weather Service says three tornadoes touched down in East Texas Saturday.
Everett has signed a local disaster declaration for the city. She says she has been contacted by local, state and federal officials, including the White House.
Everett says Oncor has sent crews to restore power and told residents not to start cleaning up damage, warning that downed trees could be tangled with power lines.
“We do thank all the individuals who are willing to help, the outpouring of love and support,” says Van Zandt County Judge Don Kirkpatrick. “We appreciate the prayers.”
Kirkpatrick says the city and county are compiling more information for people who want to volunteer or donate to the recovery.
The Red Cross has set up a shelter at First Methodist Church Life Center at 200 S. Buffalo St.
